[Solved] Installing programs on 64-bit computer intended only for 32-bit

where is the magic bullet that will allow me to play my 32bit software on windows 7 64 bit ,its driveing me nuts.please.jeff

It should just work. 32 bit support is built into wondows 7.

Specifically, which version of windows are you using, and what program are you you trying to run?

You cannot install 32 bit program on 64 bit Windows OS. While installing, it will give you an error specifying bit compatibility check. If you are able to install it, it would not work the way it should be.

Wrong sir. Win7 64 bit can run 32 bit programs with no problems. It's just that some 32 bit programs use a 16 bit installer. Win 7 64 bit can't run 16 bit programs, thus the installer fails.

+1^ Hence when you go to C: you'll see Program files and Program files (x86) The x86 is your 32 bit programs .

Wrong. 32 bit apps work under Win 7 x64. Some of the components of 7x64 are still 32 bit, too. Some really old 32 bit apps won't work under Win 7 because of the "Win 7" part, not necessarily the 64 bit part. Or they may have a 16 bit install package, which won't work under 7x64. If you absolutely need to use the app, you might consider running a virtual machine (with something like VMWare, Virtual PC, etc) or installing XP Mode support.

If your talking older games give D-Fend Reloaded a try. It is a GUI for DosBox that makes installing and running older games a fairly easy process (drag\dropping the archive into the program can usually get it installed and running but there are many other settings that can be tweaked to get saome of the more difficult games running as well.
