[Solved] Monitor displays blank screen and sometimes Check Signal Cable error

My external monitor will not work with my laptop all of a sudden, I attempted another monitor, what do I do in this case?

Do you normally have to hit the "Fn" key plus one of the "F" keys (F4 for instance)? to get it to work. On my laptop I sometimes have to do this before it will send the signal to an external monitor. It would be the key that has the little square, screen looking logo on the key.
