Hello,
I bought a new Hyrican 5188 Gaming PC today and after doing the regular startup checks I wanted to dive right into the games (tried it with Doom and Project Cars) and then it happened: After about 20 seconds the screen froze and those violet artifacts appeared (sometimes XOs, sometimes S shaped) and I had to restart the PC. The only thing I noticed is that the clocks jump to max values immediately after starting the games - but that could be normal procedure.

After that I tried other games that aren't as intensive on the graphics card like Rebel Galaxy and One Finger Death Punch and they are working (the clocks jump to max values but go down to a tenth of that after some time). Therefore I installed Afterburn and Kombustor to check what could be the problem but the problems reappeared in the Kombustor benchmark test after about 20 seconds.
Finally, I then tried the benchmarks on my older PC that I got last Christmas that has more or less the same specifications as the Hyrican 5188 but "only" a GTX 970 Strix and everything worked like a charm there.

Please help me, I'm panicking a bit at the moment. What can I do? Or is my graphics card toast???

You got artifacts under load on a prebuilt system so my advice is to contact customer support and rma the card. I know this sort of fault and it is progressive failure when the gpu isn't getting the power it needs from the vrms. This sort of failure normally occurs on older cards that have seen a fair amount of use but it happens with fresh stock time to time when people get a lemon.

Return the card and if the replacement has the same issue it could be either the psu or the board causing problems.

You could also be looking at these problems: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/941579/geforce-1000-series/gtx-1080-high-dpc-latency-and-stuttering/32/. NVIDIA is actively working on a fix, and released a hotfix that helped last week. Your issue could be different, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is a side effect of this.

Lovely more reasons to get salty about their drivers, this is one of many reasons why people are going back to retro.

All glory to the all mighty 386 with vesa local bus slots (hybrid build), windows 3.1, and a real sound blaster

Thanks for all the answers, I was able to solve the problem - at least temporarily - by installing older drivers, namely GeForce 368.39. For the last couple of hours the machine has been working smoothly - but all the trials and attempts have corrupted my Doom savefile...well, if it works now and stays that way, I guess that's a price I'm willing to pay...

Short Update:

The problems reappeared today with these drivers, too, and the PC is going back to the vendor.
