Spare yourself the misery. Put W-XP by itself on a used $250 box and install Ubuntu
on a frisky INTEL quad. Dual boots are *itches and you will get what you deserve for such byteboy folly. Usrland enjoys pure *nix.

I can't say for a Windows/Ubuntu dual boot, but my Macbook Pro dual boots OSX/Ubuntu great. Apple's Boot Camp didn't work worth sh*t for me, but rEFIt's EFI firmware edit and some root level manual partitioning have made dual booting a cinch. I feel like a lot of it comes down to getting your disk partitioning right.

This is very simple to do, but it is easier if you install Windows first then Ubuntu. That way it is almost totally automatic.

My current system boots Windows 7, Windows 8, and three varieties of Linux. This is a fairly simple setup; I've had more complicated ones in the past.

There are no performance implications whatsoever in such a setup.
