Some fuel for the "NV FX590 PS 2.0+ or not?" Fire.

I thought THIS was an interesting tidbit from the Inquirer. PS 3.0 support on the NV35, but no drivers to activate it, eh? But wait, there's a hardware glitch that doesn't allow it to work? Hhmm, Very intoooresting! Same glitch limiting PS 2.0?

It's a strange concept. PS 2.0+/PS 3.0 but not really.

Considering all the delays with Longhorn (see Tom's link to eweek's article) and thus also DX10, it's not likely to be of any use in the near future; but it will be nice for those with legacy cards in their systems by that time. Imagine, you can still sell your card in 3 years times claiming PS3.0 support. Yippee, a whole new reason to buy nV!

Some of Nvidia guys that know how things work have told our friends that NV35, Geforce FX 5900 Ultra already has support for pixel shader 3.0 but there is no any driver publicly available that will support it. µ The same source implied that when Nvidia tested pixel shader 3.0 internally, there was a hardware problem.
Even if this is true, the support is primative and underdeveloped as of now. Even if it was "decent" PS 3.0 unit, the POS 2.0 support leaves so much to be desired in current (& future) DX9 games that this product STILL isn't worth your money.

Don't get me wrong, I REALLY hope Nvidia fixes the problem, plainly because ATi REALLY needs some honest competition from Nvidia. Right now, the situaion is looking very grim for NVidia unfortunately.

ps3.0 support isn't the really big problem. good ps3.0 support is.

this means for example that the kil instruction finally kicks out directly while running, loops and all get only excecuted as long as needed, etc. it is very important for ps3.0 to have all early-out immediately to get good performance in real ps3.0 using shaders.

and, as we see, nvidia is not able to deliver good performance in real ps2.0 using shaders, too..

there's a difference between supporting it, and making it usable.

vs/ps3.0 will rock in the future, as they make very much still not doable stuff working. up till the point that we can finally really use hw to perform complex raytracing (or at least start doing so). but for this, the vs/ps3.0 have to be implemented properly.

and i doubt the cineFX architecture will ever show up anything that is implemented properly, sorry.

dave, your back? You never responded to my private message. Bottemline, since my systems aren't that fast CPU wise, would it just be best if I kept the cards to attempt mediumish settings in HL2 rather than upgrading every freakin' compenent I have in 3 systems just to bump the detail up one measily level, which woould be nice to do, but I don't think the price would justify it?

hey, don't cry because of one hour offline! opengl.org is now offline for more than a day!

and still, that one hour is nothing compared to the time it was online.. so.. if it was online the last whole year, then it was NOT online now for 0.011415525114155251141552511415525% of the year.. amazing😀

thats over 99.98% system stability!

hehe

back on topic.. or .. not😀 ufo, i replied you in a thread actually. stay with what you have now, wait for hl2, and see. if you can play it the way you want, stay with your hw. if not, get a radeon in your pricerange. it doesn't look currently like any gfFX card will be good compared to its price for hl2. but we'll see it all at the point hl2 is out!

oh, and it looks like the gfFX cannot have any features enabled a gf4 doesn't have, if you want to get good performance in hl2. so essencially moving from gf4 to gfFX means no performance or quality gain. or a big performancedrop, with a quite big quality gain. but the biggest quality is only on ati hw (float textures), and this, pared with good performance, too..

just.. wait.. and.. see..

Okay thanks dave. In anotherthread here someone just posted that they found a 9600 Pro for $100 at CompUSA after mail-in rebate. At that pricepoint, this appears like an irresistable offer to pass up. Do you know if CompUSA has an on-line store? If it does, do you think they could send me rebate forms for online purchases?

Dave is from Sweden dude (or somewhere around it), you'd get a bit more feedback from someone in the USA, dontcha think? CompUSA

Dude if you can get an R9600Pro (and a good one) for $100 that sounds like a good deal. But like DaveP said, seriously, ALWAYS wait until the game you are building for hits the market before you buy a card to play it. By then the R9600Pro's replacement will be on the shelves and you may even see some advance review/benchies of the RV380. By that time the R9600P may be $80 or less. In the end the decision is your. My R9600P does me fine. I was just playing the DEMO of Chaser and it runs REAL smooth (freakin' deathmatches with 16 people in a SMALL map is NUTZ!), no framelag (not net-lag), no jitters, no artifacts (other than the typical guy stuck INSIDE a Wall, but that happens on ALL cards).

Get it if you can use it now, otherwise wait until you need it. Likely the next gens will offer sweet options (hopefully not just taking the same architecture and bumping it to 500/350, cause I can do that NOW). If you've got the $100, and need a card, then go for it, if you're just tempted, wait.

As for the PS 3.0 support, yeah I knew it was just a lark/quirky bit of info, but I thought it was funny considering all their PS 2.0 issues. And it makes me think of the FX5900 having PS 3.0 support in the way that the FX5200N-U has DX9 support.Useless.

hi UFO, seems to me that at this point you would be better off getting an xp2500 then swapping the 1800 out with the 1500, and the 1200? with the 1500. That way everyone gets a bit of a bump (feels good) for $100. A 4200 will be much better able to use those open gl extensions with a 2500 than it will be with an 1800. Esp. if you oc the 2500 to xp3200 speeds.
