Some games use 60p instead of 60Hz

As described, in some games (almost every valve game) when set to 60Hz goes to 60p making the screen incredibly dark, the only solution to fix it is to use window mode to get around that. The problem can be annoying and it's not affecting every game (for some reason) it only happens in specific games, like in GTA IV when I set from 60Hz to 50Hz the game will go to 50p for some reason. I never had a trouble like this and I don't think that it's the fault of my TV, is there any way to get around this trouble?

If your using a HDTV, I'd suggest getting a monitor. I had that same issue with an older HDTV. Would drop to 24 Hz. Problem went away when I bought a new HDTV. And never ever happens on my monitors.
