Some Help on a Gaming Computer

I'm just now considering buying or building a high performance - but not necessarily high priced - gaming pc. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what to buy, whether by the component or off the shelf, for a budget of, let's say, 800 USD. In the case of building my own computer, I would also be grateful for any advice on assembling the components.
