cpu: i5 4790
mobo: z97mPLus/Br
ram : 8gb ram ddr3 1333
gpu: gtx 960 4gb oc mini GB
psu: vs550 from corsair

It's your motherboard. According to the manual, it only has a bandwidth of 10Gb/s on the M.2 port as opposed to modern motherboards that have 32Gb/s.

Unfortunately, not quite as your motherboard is only PCIe 2.0 in the secondary graphics card slot. The best you could hope for is around 1.6GB/s. That's still a big step up from SATA speeds though.

From the manual...

1 x PCIe 3.0 / 2.0 x16 (x16 mode)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode)
