I just finished upgrading to Windows 10 on my little ASUS 1225b laptop, and so far everything is great, except for one major problem. Immediately following the update, certain keys on the keypad stopped working. Not stopped working outright, which is why I don't think this is a hardware issue, but there is something wrong on the right half of the keypad, specifically the keys that are mapped with the number pad on them.

I'm wondering if this is just a compatibility issue related to the update not being finished (like the time I went from Windows 7 to 8 and had screen resolution issues for a day or so which solved themselves when all the necessary updates finished). But as far as I can tell Windows doesn't have any more updates to apply.

Here's what happens, with the default key press result on the left and the "numlock"ed key press on the right (no, it's not as simple as turning numlock on or off):

7/7: (no result) | 7
8/8: (no result) | 8
9/9: (no result) | 9
0//: / | /
U/4: (no result) | 4
I/5: (no result) | 5
O/6: (no result) | 6
P/*: * | *
J/1: (no result) | 1
K/2: (no result) | 2
L/3: (no result) | 3
M/0: (no result) | 0

So. when numlock is applied, it accurately maps to the alternate characters in blue that are mapped on each key, but with numlock off, the default keystrokes are all wrong.

I've tried rebooting, updating keypad drivers, turning on and off "filter keys", and any other solution I've been able to find so far, and nothing has worked.

Any ideas?

Was having the same keyboard problems with the 1225B post Win10 update. I was also getting a track pad error on boot up. From Asus' support site - http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Eee_PC_1225B/HelpDesk_Download/
-I downloaded the Win 8 x 64 track pad drivers. I uninstalled the existing ones (Synaptics pointing device), rebooted, installed the downloaded drivers, rebooted again and so far so good. No track pad errors and my keyboard is working normally (for the moment). I hope this helps.

Note ( Aug 8 2015) - The above works, however, it seems that Windows update is grabbing the newer, problematic driver via auto update and the whole cycle starts again. I've had to re-do the above about every two days to fix my wife's laptop. Anyone know...
Hi

To see if a driver problem or a faulty keyboard
Boot up in safe mode

Google on how to do this in win 8

If still wrong
Boot up off a Linux bootable cd or USB

Hirens boot cd or gparted or parted magic
Or a live Linux distribution disk

See if problem still there under different operating system

These are quicker than rolling back to Previous windows version

Assuming a windows 10 software problem look at Asus support forums to see if Asus has similar problems with beta version of 10 which have been in use for about a year and may have new keyboard driver available

I don't have a solution but I have the same laptop, Asus Eee PC 1225B with exactly the same problem after installing Windows 10, so this is clearly not a hardware issue.

Hi Mike,

Booting it in safe mode replicated the problem. I tried to boot into Linux (which I have no experience with) and ended up on a "GNU GRUB" command page, where those keys still aren't working (though I don't know if this is far enough into the OS to know if that means anything. As Matt helpfully pointed out, other users are experiencing the same problem with this laptop.

I checked the Asus support page for this computer, but there are no drivers listed beyond Windows 8.

Okay, so I talked to ASUS tech support and we tried installing the proper drivers for Windows 7 and 8, and neither solved the problem, but she's pretty sure this is a driver issue and that they're working on getting the necessary Windows 10 compatibility worked out. I'll update this when the drivers are released to confirm whether or not that solves the problem.

It may be a workaround but have any of you tried using SharpKeys? It just allows you to reassign keys using a registry hack. I used it to move my F# keys so I could assign some of them to media playback controls. http://www.randyrants.com/category/sharpkeys/

was your keyboard doing the same before?

This worked for me! It's not a perfect solution, as now those keys don't work at all for their fn+ purpose, but they do work for the primary characters assigned to them. Hopefully it's all worked out to 100% solved with the actual Windows 10 drivers.

To be honest, I don't use those function keys as described - my problem was that several of the keys mentioned initially (k,m, most of the vowels, etc) just didn't print at all - period. The solution I posted has so far solved that issue. Yeah, I think Asus will probably drop an update that will better solve the problem, but the work-around that I've suggested is working for me thus far.

Here is a partial solution. It is almost a full solution except it caused a certain touchpad not working note at startup.

1. I downloaded the windows 7 64bit drivers for my keyboard from Asus.
2. I downloaded the windows 8 touchpad drivers from Asus.
3. I installed both.
4. I removed the Lenovo Synaptic driver that was attached to my mouse.
5. I removed the Lenovo keyboard driver that was attached to my keyboard.
6. I restarted and my keyboard worked perfectly.

It was something to do with the drivers interfering with each other. If I can figure out the touchpad issue notice at startup then I'll post it here as an edit.

Same problem on my Asus 1225B going to Win 10. I had to use Alt codes for M, I and L even to put my password in to get access. Fn + Num LK just toggles between providing numbers or navigation - U/4 and O/6 move the cursor left or right - so it looks as if the driver thinks I have a separate numeric pad. Following the advice here I uninstalled the pointing device driver (it had a Lenovo one) and rebooted. Magic - that's all I needed to do. Now I can type my password in properly - the M, I and L keys deliver what they're supposed to. The touchpad still works too! - no warning message telling me to fix its driver - and I haven't got as far as installing the new touchpad driver. I will watch out for Asus offering the right one.

I have the same issue after Windows 10 installation on a Toshiba L775 laptop.

Booted with Linux live CD, problem exists

Booted with DOS, problem gone.

All above mentioned keys only work with FN key pressed..

I can't figure it out

i also have the same issue with an asus s200e.

i have

no caps lock
no shift left
no shift right
no tab
no function
and every second function to a key cant be used.

sorry for the lack of capitals in this post...it's out of my control

i have tried the above suggestions and they haven't worked but then i do have a different model asus

please asus/Microsoft sort it out

I have ASUS laptop model S301LA. Same problem so definently not hardware. I ran msconfig and selected Normal startup, "load all device drivers and services", rebooted and keys started working but only for about 15 min or so. Weird. Has to be driver related. Still working on it.

I take it back. I hit F2 like crazy right after reboot to enter BIOs and tried my H, I and U keys that were not working and they still did not work within the BIOs so I have to say it is more hardware are this point. Going to open laptop and reseat the connection. Also going to replace the tape on the connection with some good insulating tape incase there may be some interference.

I tend to believe that Windows 10 somehow messed with BIOS. Strange thing is that I made a bootable USB drive that boots in DOS, and keyboard is working fine. This is getting very strange.....

Some facts:

-Toshiba does not have my laptop (L775) in the Windows 10 compatible list.
-Sony says that my wife's VAIO should not be upgraded yet, due to driver issues, not explaining what drivers.
-No problems on my desktop

Hi,
I had the same issue, which I resolved by uninstalling the synaptics pointing device driver. After uninstalling it detected the device by itself and all the keys started working as normal.
I have a Toshiba satellite L775-S7102.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Rayyan, it seems to work, but....

It now detects a lenovo pointing device and I cannot disable the mouse pad....which for me is a problem
