are located in folders inside my 'documents' folder. I just finished restoring that folder from my backup. When the time will come to reinstall my games (mostly Steam games), will they overwrite the folders that are there? Or will they be smart and recognize the folders and files are already there?

Meaning, can I with peace of mind, after having restored my backup, or do I risk for those folders to be overwritten during the installation process, and therefore I should only replace the files with my saves and settings after I have installed the games?

Not sure if I explained myself correctly. Will all these folders be overwritten once I install the corresponding games? Or will they just add to the existing?

Solution
steam client likely smarter than that, you can probably change its settings to look for save files anywhere, but I think if you installed Client on D and documents are on C it would work it out. It would look in the registry.

most games put their save folders now in the Documents folder so I expect Steam would look there. Its just older games that put it in less obvious places.

looking at your other post, its clear they all in Users folder which doesn't change regardless of where client is, so it should find them if you put them in there. THe game I showed I filled save folder with 14 characters I haven't played in 10 years, it works.
If the save on the cloud is older than the local copy, it will not overwrite it. However, there may be other mechanisms in place to detect unsynced files. If Steam detects there's an issue, it asks if you want to use the local copy or the cloud one, and if you choose the local copy, the cloud one is likely updated as a result.

Also depends how old game is, the location games are saved to has changed sometime in the last 10 years.
I have one steam game that only sees games if located on C:\Users\<(UserName)>\Saved Games\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2

whereas save folders for more modern titles are elsewhere.

i would have restored after installing steam. that way it replaces anything newer, not older.

Makes sense. Although, since Steam saves some older game saves files on folders that are only found on C:, then that means I cannot reinstall Steam, say on my D: drive this time instead for example. Right?
