400 watt power supply
AMD duron 1.3ghz
256mb SD Ram
80gb hitachi HDD.
128 ATI Radeon 9250
Intel ethernet adapter.
Liteon 32x CD rw
Taec 32x CDROM

Several things can cause the sudden hangs.

You did not mention how old this system is.

The first thing that came to mind was overheating. Check to see if your cooling fans (cpu, case) are working. If you have a system/temp monitor bring it to the front where you can monitor.

As for memory there are 2 way. Either with Memtest86 or Prime95. I've had better luck with prime 95, adjust the ram setting to reflect your system.

This should get your started.

Daniel, you need a new computer dude! What you got now is a little on the "weak" side, no offense. 256mb single sided ram. Your gonna need 8 times that to run Vista, Im talking 2gb of DDR SDRAM. 1.3ghz duron doesnt cut it either, you need a CPU upgrade badly! At least a AMD 64 3200+ if your on a budget, and dual core would be nice if you like to multitask. Your video card has some age as well, and if you play games I'm sure you already know this.

Along with your system not having adequate "horsepower" it may be bloated with Spyware, your hard drive may be fragmented, you could have viruses.

Im not trying to knock your computer, but your gonna continue having these lockups trying to run "modern" software and applications on this machine.

Could it be (if it's not a virus or spyware) that some component is failing??

I know that I had an ancient pc and it would freeze up. So my dad had some friend of his look at it and all he did was move the memory chip to a different slot and it worked almost perfectly. (it was an old compaq running windows 98) 😉 8O

more info would help diagnose the prob.

Thanks but I fixed it, there was a switch on the mother board set on 133mhz, when the default was 100mhz.
comp is fine thanks guys

Do I leave this forum now?lol
