I'm about to buy an ssd and when i get it can i use the recovery cd that came with the laptop to format it and load windows 7? thats what the cd is for right? A little backstory, my hdd on my laptop (which is a seagate 160 gig 5400 rpm) died and i will replace it with a 128 gb ssd but i don't want to have to buy windows 7 again. thanks!

I have never tried it but my guess would be it won't work. The recovery will be expecting another hard drive, and SSD's are just not hard drives. You could double check this on your laptop maker's support site and possibly even pose the question there.

The good news is that if you could borrow a Win7 DVD from somebody, you could do an install and just use your Windows product key which is usually on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, or in some documentation that came with it. I did this recently with my Win7 disc and my brother's laptop and it worked fine.

Ok heres what came with my computer. i have the restore cd and then something totally different. This is the picture of one cd, its called a windows 7 professional 32 bit reinstilation cd:

There also comes a separate three cd set that says restore cd. im guessing the reinstilation cd would work, and the restore will not. thoughts?
