I just put together a new computer and it seems to be running hot (168 degrees) and I am not sure what it is. I have a AMD 2000+ XP and a Asus A7V333 KT333. I think it is the CPU or the CPU fan (retail cpu with fan). I do not think it could be a bad Motherboard and I have changed cases so I know it is not the power supple. I want to make sure that this will fix my problem so I can use my new computer. I was having trouble with the mother board making contact with the case but I think that problem has been solved. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated!

That is 75C, right? That is way too hot if it is correct.
Standard questions:

Did you take the plastic off the Heatsink if it had any
Did it have a pad on it, or did you use some goop
Are you using a shim
Is the heatsink turned around or not making flat contact on the CPU

Thanks for the reply. I did remove the plastic off of the heatsink and I not using any goop or shim. Just using the pad. The heatsink is flat against the chip and seems to be tightly on there.

I have done some reading and people seem to be buy their own heatsink but at the temps I am seeing, I wonder if it is just a bad chip or heatsink/fan. I am not over clocking or anything so the heatsink/fan that the chip comes with should be enough. Also, I did not mention this before but I was not sure about it, but the fan noise seems loud. I am not sure if it is loud because of the chip and the fact that the temp is so I high I am just hearing things. But it does seem loud is that normal. Thanks again!

Is the fan blowing into the heat sink? It should be. Also, you may want to remove the fan from the heatsink and make sure nothing is blocking the blades of the heatsink. I doubt this is the case since you just purchased, but worth a look. Also, did you install the heatsink in the correct orientation? Check the instructions that came with the chip (assuming it is retail)and make sure that it is on the right way.

Well, what is your aircooler? And at many Rpms does the fan works! You should try ArticSilver II or III, and make sure that aircooler is designed for AMD!Does it have good reviews? You could try the Volcano7, its kind of noisy, but have good reviews and performence!

That's way too hot! Well first be sure the motherboard isn't reading the temperature incorrectly. Some mobos read the temps too high. Still, that's kind of dangerous. Did you mount the heatsink with the step in the right place? If not the heatsink won't be making pressured contact with the core.

Some good AS 3 doesn't hurt either, but if you go that route then you have a lot of scraping and cutting to do to remove that thermal pad goop.

I just put togethere a 2200+ system last week. I used a gigabyte 7vrxp mobo though. I did purchase my own Heat sink and fan. I am partial to the Volcano 7+. I use Artic Silver II. I am running 111 F CPU full load, 104 F case. I was testing these temps with MBM 5, using 3DMark 2001. I had the fan set to med. Give me an e-mail if you have any other questions. I hope this helps

Hang in there. It can only get better!
