Somethings burnt

hi all, i don't really know where to put this post so if it seems a bit out of topic, sorry yeah.

i usually leave my com on 24/5 and it runs with no prob. but today it has suddenly gone off and won't power on anymore. I wasnt there when i happend so i dont know if it went out with a bang.

when i press the power button it flashes lights flash once and thats it.

is it the CPU or PSU ? coz the mobo light is still on.

its a P4 2.4 800 OC'ed to 2.9
an FX5600 OC'ed about 25% as well.
P4P800
512 ram
standard cheap-ish PSU.
all about 6 months old but am thinking the Overclocking has killed something..

what should i do next to test whats at fault?

Clear your CMOS and see if it boots at standard settings.

Extremely unlikely the OC had anything to do with it. The MB seems to have power, since the light's on. Make sure all your PCI & AGP cards are seated properly. I once had a graphics card slightly ajar, and the machine wouldn't boot.

Your PSU could have a single blown voltage rail, like the 12v rail. I've also seen hard drives short out when a chip on the drive's interface fries.

Something similar to this just happened to me. I was testing out a new 3.2 ghz p4 when, all of a sudden, while playing a game, i heard a pop and my comp powered down. Right away i smelled something burning. I tried to turn it on again, and all i got was a buzzing, and the PSU smelled. It was a generic (and crappy) psu that came with my Codegan case, and i think that the game just pushed it too far. But, even though the psu died, my mobo light still came on. I just popped a new psu in and it worked right away.

There shouldnt be any harm done.

just to add. when i press the power switch now. NOTHING happens. as if it werent plugged it at all. Only when i off the mains and on em again does it make a split second flash.

wasnt doing anything intensive really when it happend. it was just idling after i had played a game.

i've taken everything out and put em back togeter again. noticed the vid card fan was really dusty so cleaned that out too. reset the CMOS too.
can u actually SEE if its burnt ? coz everything looks fine really. even the CPU itself.
suspect its the PSU then.. now gotta get me grubby hands on someones PSU to test.. hmmmm.....
i read that if theres no beeping sounds means that the video and RAM are ok.

P4s shouldnt overheat and die, even if the fan would die, they have thermal protection (like any cpu these days) and thermal throtteling.

You most likely have a dead PSU. If your system was getting unstable recently, it could also be you had one those bad motherboards with leaking capacitors, but those would typically die a slow death (become unstable), not like in your case. Try another PSU, and I guess you'll be all right.
