Sony corporate leverage or Sandisk quality problem?

After purchasing a Sandisk 1GB memory stick pro it would not work in my Sony
Cybershot DSC-P150. I phoned Sony who blamed Sandisk saying that they only
recommend Sony branded sticks! I phoned Sandisk who say it is the camera!
When I told Sandisk that Sony will only recommend their own branded sticks,
the rep was not very happy. Apparently Sandisk pay a licence to be told of
any changes to the memory stick standards.

Is this just a smokescreen from Sandisk or are Sony deliberately
manufacturing cameras that only read their own memory sticks?

There is a lesson in this for me. Never, ever buy Sony with customer service
like that.

Take the stick back where you bought it from, and exchange it for another.
Also, take the cam with you so you can test the stick onsite! It's that
easy!!!

Unfortunately the stick was bought mail order. I could send it back.and
probably will. My point is that in this era of regulated standards, the
correct spec of memory card from any vendor should work. I am concerned
that Sony may be fixing it so that you have to buy there own branded sticks.

Not much different though then Olympus cames *only* allowing panorama mode
on Oly memory cards.

Something BTW which I hated about them.
