Does anybody have already tried this camera (Sony DCR-HC40)? I'm about
to buy one and I would like to hear everybody's comments on it. I've
already read the review at
http://www.dvspot.com/reviews/sony/hc40-review/index.shtml, and it
looks pretty good.

The main things I'm concerned about this camera are:

1) Video quality
2) Lens quality
3) Stills (I know, it's limited to 1MP but I would like to know how
useful they are).

Thanks!
Dimitri

i have this one for about a month and like it. traded up from hc20 to get
the better super steady cam (there is a difference!) and the super night
shot (?) but haven't used the stills (have a canon 400) but guess they're
fine for what they are.

video quality is great in good light to mediocre in dark/overcast, to pretty
poor in low light. lens seems good as these things go.

i am please overall with results. menu and screen-based buttons are MUCH
easier to use than camera-mounted real buttons, and the menu system is full
and configurable. super steady shot is easily the most effective of its kind
in cameras i saw (the usual suspects). easy to operate and integrates well
with any of the usual editing software.

i give it high marks for what it is, which is a consumer vid camera.

You might try looking over at:

From everything I've heard and seen it is a good camcorder. It is on my

Thanks! One important thing for me that I didn't mention before is the
small size. I need a small camcorder so it's easier to carry around
during my vacation trips. And the Sony's HC20/30/40 are the smallest
ones in the price range I was looking for (under US$700).

So… I just bought an HC40 for me!! :)
