News Sony makes Helldivers 2 PSN account linking U-turn — gamer uproar and review bombing turned the tide

I own the game, but I don't own a Playstation or have a Playstation account...and I don't want them either. For me this would have been 60 Euros down the drain. I'm happy for the revolt and maybe these companies will realize that we (gamers) aren't going to take their sh*t any more.

Sony isn't likely to give up; they've had bad press before, especially during Destiny, and they still came out the victors in the long run. They'll definitely find a way to entice players to sign up for PSN, just like Epic Games still gets haters signing up just to get the one (or two) free game(s) each month.

In Sony's case, they'll probably take the community suggestions of PSN-exclusive Cosmetics, but maybe also go further with a new exclusive weapon, then include the note that they will eventually rotate into the regular game shop or future Season Pass months later, which can't be argued against given that it's free, it's optional (much like paid Season Pass weapons), and will come into regular rotation later on.

The biggest issue they had was trying to force that after the fact.

Had they come out and made it very clear from the beginning this is the requirement and enforced that from the get go, that’s a different situation. But in the case where people bought the game and Sony wants to change the terms of the sale, you don’t do that.

If they’d have required a PSN account at launch, then they’d also have had the flexibility to open it up to signing in from steam etc etc, then they would have come out looking more pro consumer and looked better as a company. Whereas now it’s great they did a U Turn, but now you likely have people out there who are fed up already and may be less likely to purchase other games from them in the future.

If they really want to stoke good will maybe do a discount weekend or something where you can buy the game for 10 bucks or maybe people get a free copy of an older game during a 24 hour period or something.

Great news! This is why review bombing and refunds are so important. Those tools are all gamers have to make their disdain clear. We do not have anyone in the gaming media/journalism space that will advocate for gamers. Big gaming sites are too busy letting their writers and editors dump on their audiences.

There need to be new laws preventing companies from changing and enforcing new terms of sale. Whether it's Sony or Roku or LG, no company should be able to force a customer to adopt new terms after purchase or lose the use of what they purchased.

That would have just made it a PSN tax for buying the game punishing PC gamers for buying the game.

Except Sony DID state clearly that a PSN account would be required on its store page from the start. I don't mean to defend them, but it CLEARLY STATES IT as Required. Not Optional. Required. And Sony did intend to enforce it, the Devs themselves have mentioned it.

Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network

More importantly, it was only deferred at the request of the Devs, because they wanted to get as many sales out as possible, and quickly get as many people into the game as possible by avoiding some server issues. It's obvious many didn't read the fine print, and admittedly, it was underhanded for the Devs to insist on delaying mandatory PSN account linking partly for financial purposes. But it was always listed from the start, and it was also repeatedly mentioned that Sony would eventually enforce the requirement. The terms never changed, only the lack of initial enforcement.

In fact, despite all the drama, and the supposed refunds, player counts remained almost entirely unchanged according to SteamDB. If anything, the ones likely refunding were probably the ones who quit playing already and were taking advantage of the drama to get their money back, as well as in the regions where Sony already began to pull the game from anyway due to a lack of PSN services there.

This backtracking ultimately just makes Sony look good, "caving" to the playerbase. But the stats show that despite supposed boycotts and refunds, the majority of the players playing didn't care enough to actually drop the game enough to affect actual statistics. Odds are more likely they'll mandate PSNs for new sign-ups in serviced regions (already easy enough to cross-check with Steam given Steam's pricing and game availability changes by region), and make it optional for those outside serviced regions (where the game hasn't been pulled from the storefront yet, at any rate).

I don't know the reason for enforcing this. Perhaps Sony is trying to enable cross platform play? Otherwise, it is kind of a dumb decision.
The one community manager said it was specifically so Sony can ban people directly instead of having to go to Steam and ask...obviously because AH didnt implement a system to ban people in their own multiplayer only game 🤕🤕🤕
Also it would be so Sony can get free money from scraping your data before they get breached again for the fifth time in a year.
