Hello all...
I am using a Sony DCR TRV-460 camcorder, and am trying to convert
analog VHS tapes from a VCR, to digital, and capture in Pinnacle Studio 9,
or Cyberlink PowerDirector 3. I want to use the "Digital Convert" functions
of the camera. I have connected the cables as instructed in the manual, and
turned on the A/V--DV function in the camera. I start the VHS tape playing,
and I can see the preview in Studio/PowerEditor. But, when I start
captureing, the tape drive in the camera comes on, and the software starts
capturing that, instead of the VHS tape. The software seems to take control
of the camera, and turn that tape drive on when I start the capture.
I have looked through the software, and camera manual, looking for a
setting to disable the software from controllong the camera, but came up
dry. Has anyone else run into this? I doubt I'm the first. I'm also sure
this is just a software and/or camera setup problem, that I'm just not
seeing.
Thank you for your time.

First thing to try -- don't put a tape in the camcorder. Second,
don't close the tape door (not recommended for general use). Either
one might stop the camcorder from responding to controls, allowing
capture to proceed. OTOH, it may generate a complaint about no tape
in the VCR.

AFAIK, Pinnacle Studio has no option to capture DV manually -- same
may apply to PowerDirector. If the app was designed to capture from
DV tape, it doesn't need to disable VCR control.

But lots of other apps for capture do so. Pinnacle's scene finding
capture is quite good, ideal for using with it, but it will do the
same job on video files imported from other capture apps.

Ed, I have the TRV-460 but have not used the "Digital Convert" functions
yet, but have done some research in advance as I may try to convert some VHS
tapes in the future. It would appear that some software for some reason
will not work for the "Digital Convert" function.

Many various capture problems have been solved by using WinDV. It's free
and I have used it for straight capture from my TRV-460 and archiving my AVI
files back to the TRV-460. Their website is at:

If all else fails, you might capture directly from your VHS machine to your
TRV-460 on tape and then from the Sony to your computer. That's what I did
for the short VHS clips that I had scattered around.

That is how it is wth the TRV350. No tape, but it is not necessary to have the
door open.
