Question sony vaio

hi hope somebody can help ive got an old sony vaio vgn-nw26m which has been working fine but all of a sudden the display wont stay on on the laptop next to the power button is a display off button when i press it the screen comes on for 2 seconds then goes off is there anyway of bypassing that button so the screen stays on ?many thanks

Is that a physical button that sticks up so when the lid is closed it shuts off the display? If that is acting up, you will need to remove the top keyboard cover and see what is going on with it. It may not be the issue though, does this happen under all situations, even in the BIOS that the screen goes on but then goes off? Need a bit more detail about exactly when this issue happens. Does it load the BIOS screen then Windows but soon as it starts Windows it goes off?

no mate it was working fine then just went off so now if i turn laptop on got power hard drive is working but no display but if i press the display off /on button the screen comes on for about 10 seconds then goes off then if i press the button again the same happens?

That button only turns the backlight on/off. It does NOT turn the display itself on/off. If the backlight is turning itself off then something is wrong with either the backlight itself or its driver board. Have it diagnosed by a service center. However, expect repair to cost much more than it's worth.
