Greetings,

I've had a Samsung 955DF SyncMaster CRT Monitor for my computer for the past, oh, 20 years or so now and while it's still working to its credit, the light gets too dim whenever there's a scene set at night or in a dark room. Also, this monitor's maximum resolution is 1600x1200 at 60hz (Which I can't even use because of the flickering) and after recently getting a 1080p HDTV for downstairs, I realize what I've been missing. So I'm thinking it may be time to at least start planning to get a new monitor. ^_^;

Besides playing games from the past 10-15 years or so, I also like to play a lot of retro games from the 80s and 90s so I was thinking a 24 inch monitor that can support 1080p and 144hz would be ideal? I know 2k and 4k resolutions are becoming more popular but since those only support the most recent of games, they're not a priority for me unless they don't add hundreds of dollars to the price tag. If possible, I'd like to keep my budget to around $500 or so.

My current setup: CPU: Intel core 3 540 3.06 Ghz processor
GPU: GTX 960 EVGA SC 2GB
PSU: XFX TS 550 80 Plus Gold
Ram: 8 GB
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Any advice or help you can provide would be greatly appreciated as always.

you wont need 144hz or higher than 1080p for retro games. most of them don't support either that refresh rate or resolution or both. even if you got 144hz and a game that supports it, a 960 isnt going to push those frame rates well unless it has very low requirements like CS:GO. 2k is too difficult for a 960 to run games smoothly in my opinion. I'd keep to a 60hz 1080p monitor and save your money. you can get a decent one for ~$150.
