SoU lagging badly

[SPOILER ALERT: Ch 2 Sou minor spoilers]

My computer is 2.4GHz with a GeoForce 4 128MB video. Most of the
time, NWN runs great. Occasional lag here and there, but nothing
major.

So, I'm progressing through Ch 2 of the SoU OC and have gotten the
Wise Wind and am now looking in the Crypt for another one. I got to
the 3rd level where the walls are constantly changing. At first this
was a lot of fun but the lag is starting to get unbearable. I
starting going through some of the rooms around the edges, and it
regularly takes several seconds for the game to even attempt to
acknowledge my commands. Moving/looking around and selecting items to
open is very difficult. I've gotten some lag in some situations with
a lot going on, but this is by far the worst I've seen.

I guess I have to turn down some of the video features. Any
suggestions as which ones will have the biggest impact? I don't want
to just turn everything off, but I suppose I could do that just for
this area. I've got everything enabled because I've never really had
a problem with it, but this is definitely a problem.

Thanks for any suggestions.

This sounded so familiar I had to check my previous posts about it.
Bingo.

What I said back then
"It is, or was at least, a memory leak in SoU 1.31/1.32.
I had to revert back from SoU 1.32 to 1.30 to clear it up."

If you're using version 1.32 or 1.32, you may find that reverting to
1.30 is the cure for the lag on that particular level.
I know it cured mine when I hit that point.

Note: If you have a later patch, then I don't know - I haven't actually
played NWN or expansions lately having gotten caught up in KotOR and the
City of Heroes.

This was a nice idea for a room that unfortunately cannot be reasonably
handled by most computers. They should never have implemented this one
IMO. You're not doing anything wrong, this room lags badly for almost
everyone.

Turn everything down to their lowest settings just for this room. Get
to where you want to be in the room (basically the exit), but make a
save game before you exit to the next level.

It's actually a bug of some sort....it happens with almost all videocards
despite their cababilities (that is, after a while game becomes extremely
laggy and unresponsive in that particular room, once you're past it all is
well again). Have you updated NWN/SOU to latest possible version?

My girlfriend discovered that saving and reloading whenever the problem
gets really bad helps.

The 1.62 patch didn't change anything, the lag is still there. To screw the
video settings down doesn't help very much, after a few minutes the frame
rate is always the same (about 3.5). Your theory about a memory leak sounds
reasonable.

Not sure if it's what you meant by theory, but at the 1.31/1.32 point
Bioware confirmed they had a memory leak and provided a patch that would
revert to 1.30 .

I'd have hoped they fixed it with a post 1.32 patch but...

Sorry, I misunderstood you because I forgot that Bioware did confirm this
subject.

It's always the same story ;-) You fix a known bug and make a new bug again.
Remember the guy in Ch. 2 OC who wanted the head of the Troll Chieftain?
IIRC, with the first patch levels it was no problem to get him to stop
bashing the dummy and to start the conversation - now it is almost
impossible.
