So I was trying to get a computer working with games on Windows 98 SE. Whenever I launch a game, I get an error message that says, "fail in sound init" I don't know what this means or how to fix it. I've tried getting different drivers, but that didn't solve anything. I tried using the onboard audio, that didn't solve anything. Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix it? Also, when I remove the soundblaster, I stopped getting the notification at startup that says that I need drivers for the PCI Controller. Does anyone know how to solve that too?

Definitely try the card in a different PCI bus slot. Those connectors do go bad, and that can't be a new motherboard, so....

You may want to read through this to see if it will be of assistance in troubleshooting the issue; but, as old at that card has to be, you may be looking at an end of life issue. If so, you can find them listed on ebay for $14.00 or so; or, anywhere from $29.00 to $59.00 new.

If you need PCI controller drivers, you'll need to know the motherboard and chipset specifics to see if W98 drivers can be found for it; and this is where more information about the motherboard would come in handy.
