So my windows xp’s sound wasn’t working, and I thought that the sound device on the motherboard wasn’t working, so I installed the X-Fi Xtreme sound card. Still no sound, so I went to the website and installed the files via usb (this pc has no internet) and when I try to open the control panel for it, it says that the device isn’t detected. It’s plugged in correctly (there’s no PCI-E port so it just goes into the motherboard) and I’ve cleaned the contacts with an alcohol swab. Still not working and I have no idea what to do

I don't have the system specs, it was an old HP factory pc with windows xp media edition from like 2005. The model number is SB1040, at least that's what it says on the card. However, the pc has a new hard drive and a fresh install of XP Home Edition with SP 2 because the original hard drive was failing and Home Edition was what I had on hand

so, you really have no idea if the card itself still works?
or did you remove the card from a system where it was functioning?

when you open Control Panel > Sound,
what devices do you see?
is the card listed?

also when opening Device Manager,
is the card listed and marked with any sort of error or "!"?

have you installed all of the latest available drivers for this system/motherboard?
if you never did, it could be why these devices aren't functioning.

there should be a sicker either on the rear of the system or somewhere on the interior with make/model info.

you may be able to use this info to find any drivers that may still be available somewhere.
though if it's really from ~2005, i probably wouldn't get my hopes up.

I purchased the card off ebay. It doesn't show up in the control panel at all. I don't have the pc near me, but it's an HP Pavillion and came with Windows Media 2005. I'm gonna be testing it on my current windows 11 pc to see if it shows up at all

Just fyi, i've had no luck at all getting an X-Fi card running with Win7. It seems for that model, Creative dropped driver support with XP. So you might be able to see if the card is alive or dead, but i'm not sure you can use it in Win 11, unless it's a different model.

I do recall my old X-Fi had a blue light on it, and it would be on when the card was installed and working. Once i installed it into a Win 7 machine, that blue light was the only thing that worked in the end. :)

Shame really, as it's a nice piece of hardware. But as technology marched on, it made it redundant.

I'm trying to get it working on an xp machine. I think my main issue is the actual pc's drivers arent upated, but it's only way to connect to the internet atm is a dial-up modem. I'm in the process of hunting for my old usb wifi adapter, but I can't find it

Download drivers from another PC and put them onto a stick?

Also, apparently Creative *did* release some drivers for Win 7, albeit it took them a long time to do so. So ... yay? Maybe the latest drivers will extend the lifespan of your card.
