Sound built in to a modem?

I have a friend who just bought a new SB live value card. I looked at it and it appears that the old sound was built in the to modem??? The cd-rom plugged into the modem and it had a small cable going over to the next opening where you connect the external speakers. If you remove the modem and the old drivers the sb live works fine. When the modem is re-installed it finds the riptide drivers and screws it up again. So, I thought he should get a new modem and this would fix the problem. Am I correct in saying this. The motherboard is an ASUS P2B-VT.

New modem or perhaps a different soundcard. The Creative drivers have a plethora of problems.

Tell him you love his hewlett-packard and to get a new modem, a Lucent (now called Agere) 1646T00 chip modem would be perfect and cost around $15.
