Sound card and NIC card clash

i have a athlon xp 2200 system with a built in realtek ac97 sound card, and just recently i've added a
Realtek RTL8193/810X NIC card (PCI) and i can't get sound out of the sound card no more.

i can only get sound if i disable the NIC in device manager and reboot.
I already went to realtek.com.tw to get the latest drivers for both hardware.

What other remedy can i try?

Plus i have two hard drive on my system, the primary is 80GB and the second is 40GB.
And after i plugged in the NIC card, the second HDD kept getting not detected during startup...
Could the NIC card somehow drew too much power causing the second HDD to not start?

you might have already done this, but try this...have both the NIC and the sound card Enabled. in the Device Manager under Network Adapters, if you look at the Properties of the NIC and go to the Resources tab, does it state that there is a conflict?

Many have found the bundled Realtek NIC driver buggy. Before you struggle with your problem any longer download the latest XP drivers from <A HREF="http://www.realtek.com.tw" target="_new">http://www.realtek.com.tw</A>. This alone may clear up your problem.

Those original drivers are dated from 2001 or 2002 while the latest are dated October 28, 2004.

Have you tried different slots? It sounds like a resource conflict, VIA has a terrible time with running too many bus mastering devices (a problem that can affect any chipset, but VIA seems especially sensitive).

I agree with Crashman on this. Try swapping a couple cards around. The first PCI slot (the top one), is usually shared with the AGP slot and sometimes onboard devices. Try moving it down.

The 2nd PCI slot on a lot of old VIA boards was also shared with the AGP slot. Try the 3rd one.
