Sound card + decoder box + true 5.1 headset blow away a usb 7.1 headset?

Just curious. I had a friend say he used to own and use on board sound with a pair of logitech g930s with the 7.1 virtual surround and liked it.

He recently went to a nice $170 Soundcard, a decoder box and a pair of the true surround tittan pro 5.1 headsets. He said the
Sound quality and overall just blows the prior setup away. Is this true? Is the Soundcard and decoder box paired with a true 5.1 headset that big a differenc
