I know that Sound Card give better sound quality for games/music/movies and some also amplification for headphones. What other features do PCI(e) Sound card give to distinguish themselves from external DACs or even audio interfaces.
In the old days when on-board audio was basic Sound cards not only improved audio quality but also had special features like 3d positional audio, EAX. Do today's cards still have that or are they just focusing on audio fidelity(there is very little about gaming features, its mainly bit that, HZ this), which the same thing what external DACs are doing.
And there is also the issues with drivers.
So is there any point getting a PCI(e) Sound card over a DAC?
