Sound Card For Karoake

I sang in karaoke chat rooms using Win XP, Realtek sound card, and a Creative external Sound Blaster setup. I am a novice to all this sound system stuff. My desktop computer crashed and I purchased a Toshiba Satellite L 655 laptop with Win 7 OS, and coxenant sound card. I cannot use my microphone any longer in the karaoke rooms. I have had numerous savvy techy people try to help me fix the problem. I am wondering if Win 8 is set up like Win 7, or has the sound card problem been fixed? I want to get back to singing, but every attempt to do so is thwarted by the changes made from XP to the 7 OS. Please advise.
