I am looking for a sound card to run on a new system with Win2k(Abit KG7 mobo). I have seen numerous posts concerning problems with SB Live under Win2K. Have these problems been resolved?

Does anyone have experience with a card that works well with win2k? I would prefer a card for $70 or less.

I personnaly used my SoundBlaster Live! PCI under Win2k without problems. I never heard of special problems of SoundBlaster with Win2k.

My system :
ASUS K7V MB
Athlon 550 Mhz

I use the Diamond Monster sound MX-400 without a glich. However, this card is not listed on the compatibility list there is an update on Microsoft's Critical Updates site that automatically fixes this problem by installing drivers for ESS/(MX-400). Also the card has capability of connecting two channels for surround sound. The price is right for this PCI sound card.

If you can deal with not installing the card in a PCI slot until after W2k finishes its initial hardware inventory of your system when first installing the OS you will have no problems at all. Install it after W2k is installed then go to MS critical updates "Drivers" and you will see the ESS driver for the card. Let it automatically install and you are done.

Any Yahama chipset...
Think I'm usin Xwave's - $12 or less at computer shows! Think there's actually lots of geneics with the yahama chipset. NO problems! they auto detect, auto install, driver in on the Win2k CD - just no problems...

And I think their crisper and cleaner sounding with less distortion than SoundBlasters thru good powered speakers and subwoolfer. The driver doesnt give ya a bass and treble control on the volume control like Soundblaster drivers but with WinAmp (or any digital preamp control) and ya got it all. And plug into your big sterio system or soundboard just fine...

Had one pop and crack when I moved the mouse on one system, but move the card to another slot and it goes away(interupt sharing interference?). Have put em in LOTS of WIN2k boxes - clean crisp - no problems...

Killer price preformance!

I have used and MX-400, SB Live! Value, and SB Live! 5.1 and have had no problems with any of them. My brother uses the Yamaha YMF744 chipset in his Win2k machine and doesn't have any problems either. I think my SB Live! sounds better though... 😉
