Sound card necessary with headphones?

Hello,
i have a problem with my sound card.When I am using my skype then i'll call he can hear me but he can't hear what I am saying.

What microphone are you using? Where is it plugged in? Do you have multiple microphones, or places to plug them in? In Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices (assuming WinXP) make sure your microphone is the default sound recording device. In your mixer application for your sound card, make sure your mic is not muted. If there is a "mic boost" checkbox, selecting it may help.

The tips in the post above are helpful. I would also suggest running this diagnostic sound test on MS's site: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/no_sound/en-us

It might help you in determining exactly what the issue is if nothing changes once you change the settings in your control panel, though it is a possibility you may need a new sound card.
