I removed the front of the sound card, leaving only the back of the sound card plugged into the motherboard and the sound is not working when only the back is plugged in. How come the sound only works with the front part of the sound card plugged in?

One of the two contains the actual sound card and the other is (likely) a blank with just audio ports you can plug into. Depending on how it's designed you may be forced to have both parts connected. What model/brand is your sound card?

Thanks, the sound card I have is the PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series.

I just spoke to Creative support (company who makes the sound card) and they said it will work on its own without the front. However, when I only use the back part that plugs into the motherboard without using the front part, no sound comes out.
