Sound Card setup

So just got my sound card, put it in the PCI slot and notice 4 pins at the top, So I assume it must need power, then after trying all the power cables I realize there is a plug in next to it 4 pins as well. Of course, I find only 6 pin connectors. Is the 4 pins necessary?

Those pins are not for power they are for audio input to the card from DVD drives etc

No. The DVD sound will be transmitted digitally on the pci bus. You only need that for analog input.
