sound card troubles

I have now had both my on-board sound card and most recently an asus DGX Xonar osund card fail, they both appear to be generating noise as when i click test in the playback devices window the green bars move but no sound is produced i have tried 5 different sets of headphones and none of them pick up any sound at all. the only reason i bought the asus sound card is because the on board one ceased to function.
im currently using an Intel I7 4930K on an MSI big bang xpower II with 64Gb of kingston hyperX beast ddr3 ram an evga gtx 970 sc asx 2.0 and windows 10 pro. im at a loss as to what the hell is going on with these components, and any help will be most appreciated.

Did you set the sound card as the default playback device in win10? It probably defaulted to the hdmi audio of the GPU.

I have, and I've installed the latest drivers I've done everything. It seems like the law of physics doesn't apply as I can see it generating sound by the green bars moving but it doesn't come out of the headphones all of them I've tried several different sets to eliminate the headphones being the problem. The strangest thing is the on board sound card did the same about 8 months ago and is still the same now.
