Sound coming thru speakers and earbuds using Y Splitter

I have a Y connector connected to the audio port on a monitor. I have the standard audio cable running from the back of the desktop device into the one side of the Y splitter and my ear buds into the other half. Audio can be heard from both the monitor speakers and the earbuds.

I don't have this problem on another device, only this one. I have done all the standard things for this situation and I am now beating my head against a wall. Any help would be appreciated

What is your problem? Your using a y-splitter and your getting sound from both devices? That's what a splitter does.

I want the sound to only come thru the earbuds like they do on my other device.

Then only connect the earbuds to the Y splitter. or get rid of the Y splitter.

Whenever you use a Y splitter, and connect 2 different devices to it, it is going to send the audio to both devices. It is not capable of reading your mind, and then adjusting the connections based on what you were thinking.

Connecting only the earbuds to the Y splitter doesn't work because the audio is then not getting to the monitor. I am using a Y splitter because the desktop device is too far away to connect the earbuds directly. This works on a different device, same exact model. was hoping someone would have an idea I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

I don't get it. You want audio to the monitor but not out of the monitor. I'm confused.

You are talking out both sides of your mouth.

First you complain that sound is going to both devices. Then you say you want sound to go to both devices.

It cannot be both ways.
