Hi,
I built my pc a few years ago, and ever since I've been having a problem with heat. First off, my specs:
Intel core i7 950 @3.06 ghz (standard clock)
3 x 4 (12) GB G-SKILL RipJaws DDR3 RAM
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard
XFX ATI HD5770 1 GB video card
XFX ATI HD5770 1GB video card (single slot)
650 watt power supply
cheap case with no fans
So basically, the PC originally was built with all parts but the second HD5770. I could run most games on mid settings without a problem, but my GPU would constantly crash because of overheating. My screen would freeze, lines would be drawn and a monotone buzzing would blast through my speakers. At that point, I set the fan speeds to a manual 100% all the time, and continued to play. It served fine for about two years, when I began (even on low settings and resolutions) to experience crackling noises and synchronous frame drops when playing for long periods of time. In games like BF3, I would use console commands to draw graphs of my CPU and GPU usage to find micro stuttering. The graphs would grow instantly for about a second, at the same time I heard a sound pop or crackle.
Just recently, I bought another HD5770 so I could run my two cards in crossfire. The results have been great, and the second HD5770 alone (dual slot) alone runs much cooler and without static or micro stuttering. But when paired together, despite a performance increase, I still suffer from the first card's crackling and microcomputer problem.
What is causing the crackling and stuttering? Perhaps single slot cards have worse air circulation, but I'm running at the default clock, so it shouldn't be a problem. Even then, my fans are at 100%, so any heating issue should be combated at this stage. My case is fan less, but even taking off the side panel does nothing.
Thanks
EDIT: Exactly what is happening:
