This issue started just recently and I can't figure out what's causing it. Things were fine since I built this PC back in February and all of a sudden it starts acting up.

If I'm playing a game or watching something and the sound gets quiet it will just fade out completely then when the volume spikes up it will instantly come back.

I was able to get a quick work around for when I'm gaming by just increasing in game volumes and it doesn't fade out, but it's still a pain when I'm trying to watch a movie.

Any ideas? I've checked all drivers and such with no luck.

Running Windows 7 64 bit and using onboard sound from an ASRock Z97 Extreme6 mobo.

Yes, I've tried with two different pairs of headsets, the speakers on my TV which I use as a monitor and also the speakers on my actual monitor. They all have the same issue.

It is possible then that your sound device itself is going bad but before getting a discrete sound card see if this what the guy did to fix his sound issue may help yours. His is the only post I found that didn't claim a new sound card, new drivers, or a completely new install was needed to fix the issue.

I actually had somebody else that I game with suggest that very thing and had no luck with it.

Okay it was just a shot to see if it may help. Yours is an odd problem because unless a program is recorded at a lower or higher volume, the only thing that comes to mind is a hardware issue. If you know anyone with a sound card, you could try borrowing one just long enough to see if it would fix or point to your problem. Short of reinstalling drivers again for the third or fourth time, I can't really think of any other way to try to fix it. If it is a hardware issue then even a fresh windows install won't fix it.
