Sound: Digital Output has only 2 channel?

This might apply to more than the Asus Rampage III Formula Model

I just bought a $350 digital speaker set thinking I can get digital 5.1 Sound.

So I hooked my optical digital out from the Motherboard to the Speaker and it works great.

Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to make the Optical Output 5.1 sound. It seems stuck on stereo.

All the configuration settings in the Realtek Configuration and Windows 7 Sound Configuration seems to indicate that the optical out is only 2 channels.

Is this correct? Or are there driver updates that makes 5.1 output possible on the Optical jack?

Control Panel => Sounds => Playback tab => Select your speakers and click Configure. Select your audio channels and click Next to select your "Full-range speakers" setup and continue... Did that help?

Digital Output is completely separate than the regular speaker settings.

There is no speaker configuration for the digital out. That is what is weird about it.

Under the Digital Dialog there is the Output option, but all there is is the 2 channel outputs.

Were you ever able to find a solution to this problem? I am having the same issue running an Asus Sabertooth X58 board

Nope. Pretty much settled on the idea that the onboard audio only have 2 channel optical out.
