Sound drop-outs

I hadn't really noticed it before, but I'm hearing (or not as the case
may be :) it a lot more in the end of the NWN OC and now in the SoU
OC, sounds dropping out. During these times, I can not hear my
characters fighting, opening chests, getting hit, etc. I assume it's
because there's so many background/environmental noises, not to
mention combat music and who knows what else going on. Thing is, I'd
rather the game drop out the background noises instead of the effects
for what your character is actually doing.

Do other people experience this effect? And what can be done about it?
I think I have a Turtle Beach sound card, but don't know the model at
this point. To be honest, I didn't think to check until just know to
see if the settings can be changed to better effect. I don't want to
lose any of the sounds, and most of the time it isn't a problem, just
in the really busy areas. Or maybe my sound card can just no longer
cut it and an update would solve the problems. If so, any
suggestions?

Thanks for any comments.

It's just a matter of sequence I think. All your sound cards audio channels
are in use, and whenever a new sound is played, the one that is "oldest"
gets dropped. Don't remember this happening to me ever though, propably
differences in audio hardware (I have SB Live, using EAX2 sound mode).

Well, it happens to me often enough to irritate me, so maybe something
is wrong with my setup. I checked and have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz,
which should have been the best option available from Dell when I
bought the computer.

I tried to fire up the Turtle Beach setup software and discovered ...
it's not there. So, rounded up the latest driver version and
re-installed it, now I have software control for the sound card. For
the "Wavetable Synthesizer Settings" it had maximum hardware and
software notes set at 32. I've changed the maximum hardware notes to
the maximum setting of 64. For software, it could go all the way up
to 1024, so not sure what to set here. Any suggestions or does this
even matter? In NWN, there is no setup option for the Santa Cruz. I
had EAX disabled as I seem to recall things being flaky a while ago.
I've tried re-enabling that and it's auto-selected "Creative Labs
EAX2" from the advanced sound options. I'll give this a try and see
if it makes any differences. Any other suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

The "wavetable syntheziser" is for MIDI sounds, so it doesn't affect
anything in NWN. Go to Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Audio ->
Sound Playback: Advanced -> Performance and make sure both sliders are set
to maximum (hardware acceleration/sample rate conversion quality).

If you can find in your driver settings something called "wave-audio
channels" or "3D audio channels" set that to maximum. (these options may or
may not exist, I'm not familiar with Turtle Beach products)
