I have a new Yamaha 7850 AVR (has HDMI ARC) and an older Panasonic TC-P50V10 (non-ARC HDMI) setting up for 5.1 surround sound. Also have a blueray player in the mix. Haven't done final hook up yet, but here's how I intend to do it: HDMI's from STB, Blueray, firestick into AVR HDMI inputs, HDMI out from AVR to TV. I have read stuff about ARC, but I'm still somewhat confused. What I need to know is:

For both questions, with regard to just sound from the TV only, I am referring to being able to turn on only the TV (and not the AVR) to hear sound from the TV's speakers.
  1. If I go from AVR HDMI ARC to TV HDMI non-ARC, without using an optical cable between the two, can I choose to have sound out of either the TV only or out of the SS SS speakers only?
  2. If I go from AVR HDMI ARC to TV HDMI non-ARC, using an optical cable between the two, can I choose to have sound out of either the TV only or out of the speakers only?

Most AVRs allow you to designate one of the inputs to 'passthrough' ... the avr does not have to be on for it. For the other inputs ... it would have to be on for the TV to receive the signal.

Should had stopped right there. ARC ONLY WORKS WHEN BOTH PIECES SUPPORT IT, so your case ARC unusable, move on. Use optical between TV and AVR if you want TV sound on AVR.

If u want sound on TV built-in, oftentimes you have to go into TV menu and enable this, which makes kind of a pain if you want to switch sound to AVR again, there is no one-button setting.

OK, everything is now hooked up and working. I decided to run the ARC HDMI from AVR to TV. I also ran an optical cable between both units. Now, if I got things right, I should have my bases covered??? Tomorrow I'll be trying to calibrate the speakers. I do have a volume reader and Avia 1, but I'm not sure how deep I be going. Probably just getting the 5 speakers' outputs to a pleasing level. Going to have to spend the day reading the manual, ugh!

Although easy enough to do, I haven't don't it before knowing ifIobtain the resuts I'm looking for. As I have the optical cable between the V and AVR, note that I can't use the TV's audio. Was wodering if I detach the optical, will that then allow one to turn on the tv and just have its sound without turning on the AVR? Haven't read the manual yet about a just TV sound pass through.

"turn on the tv and just have its sound without turning on the AVR "

It depends what you are trying to display on the tv. If it's something connected to the input of the AVR then the AVR must be on (except for the input designated for passthrough) ... does that make sense?
