Question Sound problem that may be CPU related ?

Hi all,

I'm having a strange issue with sound that I think might be related to my CPU as there is a bit of history that I'll add at the end.

The problem is that I am having sound glitches, like a 'peaking' or tearing noise you might hear when sound recording. It is seemingly occurring when the CPU is working hard (according to the task manager). What's strange is that I am also having the problem when I use an external audio interface (Steinberg UR22C), in fact it's far worse when I use that. It comes through the speakers and the headphones in both instances, even when the headphones are plugged into the audio interface directly.

The history is that I recently had to replace my water cooler as it was blocked and the CPU spent some time overheating before I figured that out. The CPU is an Intel 7700k, purchased in a prebuilt system in 2017, for the record. It had quite a few auto resets and BSODs before I realised it was the cooler and replaced it and the CPU went above 90 celsius a number of times. Is it possible that it's wear and tear from that? Now that I have a new cooler it's running otherwise well.

It just seems very strange to have this issue regardless of the source of the sound. What do you think?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Please pass on your specs to the build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Is it possible that it's wear and tear from that? Now that I have a new cooler it's running otherwise well.
If the platform shut off when it went to those temps, then the processor was protecting itself. If you subjected it to those temps for a long period of time then it might've done a number on the processor. I'm leaning on the drivers being the issue or your OS being corrupt.

Thanks, Lutfij :)

Specs as follows:

CPU: Intel i7 7700k 4.2ghz
CPU cooler: Phanteks Glacier One 240T30
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix z270f Gaming (BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 0604, 8/12/2016)
Ram: 32gb Corsair DDR4
SSD/HDD: Intel SSD PEKKW512G7
Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe 1TB
Seagate Barracude HDD ST2000DM006 2TB
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 12gb
PSU: Not sure, but will report back. It's set in a compartment in the bottom of the case so I'd have to open it up. It's the same age as the processor, so around 7 yrs.
Chassis: Phanteks Eclipse P400s. I have an intake fan on the back and cooler out the top.
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Monitor: 2x AOC 27G2G4 144Hz 27i

It did shut off a few times, and this is possible. Since then, the computer has been having these sort of temporary freezes or hangups, especially on startup. When this happens the computer seems to detect input but it doesn't show it for 2 - 5 seconds. Eg. I type my windows password, nothing happens and I can't move the mouse, but then when it springs back to life it has typed the password in, and the mouse changes position to where it was moved while the display was frozen. I did do a repair on Windows and it doesn't hang at that particular point anymore, but sometimes once my desktop appears it has a few similar freezes, presumably while it is loading all the startup programs. This is also what makes me wonder if it's CPU-related.

Appreciate the follow-up!
