Soundcard Question

Hey everyone, I was wondering if I would be able to have a speaker system plugged into my onboard soundcard AND a 7.1 headphone headset plugged into an ASUS soundcard and have them both work (not at the same time obviously). Or do I absolutely have to disable my onboard soundcard for a PCI card to work? I would just prefer to not have to plug and unplug every time I use the headset I'll be getting. I have a USB set but I'm dying for the new Razer Tiamat that plugs into the soundcard. Sorry for the long-winded question. Thanks everyone.

hard to say with a 7.1 multi 3.5mm plug headset. i know that the answer is most likely yes with a stereo single 3.5mm plug. you might be able to swap using windows sound options by changing the default device. or you might want to get some sort of 3.5mm switch box/splitter box to use.
