A few weeks ago I bought myself a decent gaming PC and I've been pleased with it so far, but I am worried something is seriously wrong. Basically, when I'm playing source engine games (CSS, CS:GO or TF2) and I move my mouse, the whole game stutters (This happens in menus too). It runs fine when I'm moving and not turning, and I can shoot fine, but as soon as I turn or move the mouse, the whole game slows down to like 1 fps if I'm lucky. Just to make things even more confusing, it doesn't happen 100% of the time, sometimes the game runs fine after a restart, sometimes if I unplug a USB device (external HDD or USB headset) and restart it works, sometimes I can restart the computer half a dozen times and its still unplayable. To make it even better, if the game works immediately after a restart, and I leave the pc for a while and come back, the problem is sometimes there again. This also only happens in source games, battlefield hardline runs at a good 70fps on ultra, other games run excellent, the problem only occurs in source engine games.
My system is as follows:
CPU - i5 4590
GPU - Sapphire R9 290
Motherboard - Asus H81 gamer
PSU - Cougar 550W
RAM - Crucial 1600mhz 8GB x 2
OS - Windows 8
HDD - Seagate 1tb
SSD - Kingmax x value 120gb
[strike]Not the best system, but it's been going pretty good apart from this hiccup with source games. I also use a ducky shine zero TKL keyboard and I have a razer deathadder 2013 edition and a Logitech g502 mouse, and the latest drivers for both mice.[/strike]
[strike]Using the G502, putting CSS in windowed mode and having the task manager up, I noticed there were no CPU spikes, just the usual variation of a few percent whilst moving the mouse in a game. I also played with polling rates on the G502, and at both 500mhz and 1000mhz the game was unplayable. At 250mhz there was some very slight stutter, barely noticeable, and at 125 mhz, the game ran fine. I haven't tried differing polling rates on the deathadder, however I have found the deathadder doesn't cause the problem as much. I have also tried different USB slots for both mice, and that hasn't helped.[/strike]
[strike]I have run a scan with malwarebytes and I use trend micro as my normal internet security, I have verified the games files and even re downloaded the game. Someone said I should re download steam so that's my next step tonight while I'm at work. I have heard malware can cause it, specifically the stij.exe virus but both malwarebytes and trend micro did not pick that up, nor can I find it in the task manager. I am stumped, and if re downloading steam doesn't fix it my best guess is there's a problem with the motherboard or somethings been connected incorrectly. [/strike]
Please help, this is driving me nuts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I just plugged my deathadder back in and dropped the polling rate down to 125mhz (down from 500), CSS runs at a playable level but there is still some very slight stutter.
EDIT 2: I've managed to more or less consistently cause and stop the lag now. Basically it lagged whenever I had google chrome open, more tabs (especially youtube) = more lag. I have now downloaded adobe flash again and disabled chromes flash player, so now CSS and CS: GO are fairly playable even with a youtube video open (there's still some jittering though). With chrome closed, they run fine apart from a few random lag spikes every few minutes (a new problem). Still, any help or other suggestions would be appreciated!
EDIT 3: Uninstalling the Razer and Logitech software seems to have fixed the issue. It would appear I have made a huge problem out of something so simple. Thanks cats_Paw, I don't know why I didn't try that initially.
For any other people having the same issue, uninstalling the Razer and Logitech software helped the most, although re downloading adobe flash and disabling chromes built in flash player, as well as disabling multicore rendering in game did help a small amount.
