I am having problems with slow file opening and slow network printer
properties display on an XP Pro computer with SP2 installed. This problem
started recently, and I believe that installing SP2 may have caused it.

The slow file opening is completely eliminated by disabling the printer
spooler service, but this disables network printing. I am tempted to try
replacing the SP2 spoolss.dll with the SP1 version. Will this cause
problems? Should I replace other files at the same time?

Thanks.

I'll partly answer my own question.

XP Pro would not allow me to replace the SP2 version of spoolss.dll with the
SP1 version. After I tried it, my installed printers disappeared.
I have still not solved the problem.

i had some luck disabling the netbios in tcp/ip advanced wins. it may limit
your access to the network, but it seems to fix the slow printing dialog and
property boxes

Thanks very much for responding. As you say, it might limit network access
(to the Samba domain) but I'll try it.

BCY1;

I tried it. It knocked out communication with the printer entirely. When I
rebooted, the on board networking (the Marvell gigabit on an Asus A7N8X-E
Deluxe mobo) had somehow been uninstalled, and this knocked out access to
the Internet across the LAN, so XP Pro could not find the driver online. I
eventually got it back up.

Well, it sounded like a good idea.
