SP2 Windows updates question please

I've been reading MS's site on SP2 and windows updates. I'm getting the
impression that after SP2 is installed, if I don't select automatic
updating in the security center settings, I'll be getting a pop up
constantly reminding me that I might be "at risk".
I like to manually view critical updates and download them during times
when I'm free to do so. The point is that I don't want anything
downloading in the background while I'm working on the computer, which
apparently is what the big selling point is for selecting automatic
updating. I do a lot of graphic intensive work on the computer and
ANYTHING downloading in the background uses resources that I need
elsewhere while I'm working.
Will I be (post SP2 installed) committed to having that pop up appear
all the time on the taskbar reminding me about updates or can this be
turned off perhaps?

You can turnoff the Automatic Updates even if you installed Windows XP SP2.
You have a range of options to choose from for configuring "Automatic
Updates". These Options are:

a) Schedule at a particular time: You can ask Windows to download updateds
from WindowsUpdate Site at a specified time. Say every sunday at 3:00am or
so.

b) Automatic Download: Let Windows download the updates but you choose what
and when to installl

c) Notifiy Me: Let Windows notify you whenever new updates are available
and you take your own effort and time to visit WindowUpdate site and decide
what to download and when to install

d) Turn Off: Do nothing. Windows does not notify you neither downlads. You
take effort yourself to visit the site and find downloads etc.,

I too thank you for your explanation.
One is left to wonder though why MS changed the Updates situation.
I have not installed all of SP2...I think it shows two files have been
installed.
But pray tell why the hell did MS change it so the automatic upgrade
must be set "on" to visit and have the "upgrade page" function.
This has changed from what I experienced before I d/led the last two
files.
I had the automatic update turned off and could visit the site and
manually check for Updates and manually select and install any I wanted
too, now automatic upgrade must be turned on for the upgrade page to
function at all.
This type of action by MS along with a few other things like the failure
of trying to remove a program from startup with msconfig is rapidly
turning me off WinXP.
