Space Ship Game - 1980s

There was a game in the 80s that you could upgrade your spaceship as you worked through the levels. Can't remember the name. It was part of the software present on an Acer computer. There were different spaceships, different levels of power source, different levels of munitions and more than one shield option. Think there was an x or a z in the name, but I just can't quite name it.....

There are a lot of games that had that feature, can you further describe the game? Privateer is probably the one I liked the most. I think it was a shoot of from the Wing Commander series.

Only one I played a lot was Freelancer, but that came out in early 2000
