Recently went to you guys for advice on how to best approach my second GPU getting ruined, and I think it helped. But here I am again after a few weeks.
Recap:
Act 1 - GPU1 started “surging” while playing games; narrowed this down to a memory issue—big games loading in their initial assets upon boot caused surge. RMAd the card.
Act 2 - GPU2 hooked up. Almost immediately upon launching a game is fried and did not POST. PC worked fine without the GPU. Some suggestions told me my Supernova G1 was a potential problem. I guess an especially shitty PSU that’s dying can fry a GPU. A few days after I swapped to using the PC without a GPU, my Supernova dies completely. I replaced it with an RM650i, and RMAd GPU2.
Act 3 - GPU3 hooked up, new PSU put in—all the cables and whatnot are the fresh new ones. I buy Destiny 2 and AC Origins after initial trial runs of games give no issue. I play about 15-20 hours of these two new games over the course of three days without problem. Life is great. On day 3, my PC hard-powers down while playing Origins. My heart sinks. The MOBO isn’t getting power (green light isn’t lit). I figure: maybe I tripped something weird, so I cut power to the PSU and power it back on. Green light. Start it up. All lights in the case begin to flicker and struggle, then sparks, and finally a quarter-second later there’s a small fireball in my case. I immediately cut power to the PSU and it’s gone. I took a chance and tried turning on the PC without the GPU hooked up and it seems to turn on fine, but I’ve kept it powered down since.
I plan to stop by a much more savvy friend’s place for a complete rebuild to see if everything’s in the right place. For the record, there’s very little in the way of visible damage anywhere.

You can see it mostly in the top left corner. I can’t see anything noticeable on the MOBO. I’m just looking for suggestions on what could have caused the fire. For reference again, this is a brand new GPU, PSU and set of PSU cables. The only thing “old” in the chain is the MOBO. Is there anything we should look for or do?
