Speakers plugged into monitor won't produce sound

Hoping to find out why I can't get sound from my speakers, which are plugged in via an aux cable into my monitor, which is plugged into my computer via HDMI. I have the speakers plugged in, but the monitor still has sound coming from its internal speakers. Is there a way I can change this? I'm on windows 8 if that is any indication. Thanks in advance!

What monitor? Have you checked its manual?

This is the monitor I'm currently using. I haven't been able to find the manual, but I'm currently looking for it.
