I just blew out 1 of my 2 tiny altec lansing speakers, and now I am checking pricewatch for new speakers. @ compubuzz.com they have a surround sound set of 4 sats and a subwoofer and the package booms with 850 watts. What I am wondering is should I buy them because of the raw power, or shouldn't I cuz they are a no name brand? Any input appreciated.

NO you should NOT buy THOSE crappy speakers!!! You are being fooled!!! The watts you are reading are the PMPO, which does not mean CRAP!! What REALLY determins the raw power of speakers are the RMS watts, which they don't even list there--so I bet it is more like 10 watts total!! I bet you those speakers cannot even get as loud as good head phones!!!
When you are looking at the wattage of speakers ignore the PMPO rating and look at the RMS instead.

yeah, dam rip off merchants always quote pmpo, REAL audio equipment will quote REAL power figures. a speaker/amp setup that could pump out 850W rms would cost more than my car :)

Yeah, avoid retailers who quote the PMPO rather than the RMS - they clear have no moral problem with ripping you off on that, maybe they'll be ripping you off on something else.

I've found the PMPO tends to be about 10x the RMS (but not always), so they could be good speakers - just find another retailer.
