Anyone know if there is an external antenna connection on this card of
the soon to be released Sierra Aircard 580 (which is what Sierra is going to
sell now that they bought Airprime)?

I recently bought and use the 5220 card, and it appears to have a very small
coaxial connector in the end of the card. I haven't been able to find any
specs on the connector, though.

I had to go to two vendors to get an external antenna for the 5220 (as
far as I know, the 580 should be identical). Here's where I got the
patch antenna (part CA09-1G):

http://cellantenna.com/Antennas/patch.htm

That site forced me to choose an adapter, but the 5220 doesn't appear
in the list, so I picked one at random and deleted it from the
shopping cart before I checked out. Then I ordered the antenna
adapter cable from here:

phone=VERIZON+PC5220#421575

It definitely makes a difference. In a place where I had no usable
signal (this was in a 1xRTT area--the signal has been quite strong in
the 1xEV-DO market I tested--Washington, DC), the antenna made a huge
difference. I wrote up my initial results here:

Brian,

Thanks so much!! I'm trying to help a charity with a computer lab
project for migrant kids and they don't have access to cable or DSL. Their
dialup speed is about 24k, so this could be a big help. Now if I can talk
VZW into a cheap rate for them :)
