Question Speccy and Cpu-z mem at 667 or 669 mhz when it is actually at 1866 mhz

System has an fx 8300 @ 3.3 ghz, 16gb ram, r9 390 2gb and mobo is gigabyte 970A-DSP3 with latest bios patch. I have no option in bios to activate the XMP or the AMD version. running ssd and hdd's. There are 2 dimms of hyperx fury blue of 4gb each and one hyperx fury of 8gb same specs. 1866mhz, cl10, 1.5v
Problem is, bios is showing them at 1866mhz on auto, however, if i put them manually at 1866 system wont boot. Since i have dual bios i can restore easy. Speccy and Cpu-z shows them at 667 or 669 mhz. The gigabyte system utility shows it at 1866mhz in windows. What is real and why only 667? Maybe you guys can help me, as this got me stumped

Speccy and CPU-Z are stating that it's running at around 1333 , it's DDR so you double it in the software.

how do you mean you double it by software? So ok, its dual channel and its times 2 but how do you achieve more with software? And why doesnt the mobo allow for manual setting it to 1866?

Your CPU memory controller probably can't handle it. It's rated for 1866 MHz for two sticks only*. That, plus the fact you're combining two different memory kits. This can cause compatibility issues, even if the sticks have the same specs.

*According to Wikipedia anyway.

On a better board it would PROBABLY run higher , I use to run 2133 4X4 on my ASUS 990FX Sabertooth.

Yeah but, idont really need that. At that point, the bottleneck would be the rest of the comp vs mem speed. i would just be happy with it running @1866. So why does the gigabyte utility show 1866 an cpuz only 667

I'd trust CPU-Z over Gigabyte's utility every time.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "fluctuating per idle level", but if you mean that the mean the DRAM frequency is varying a bit that's normal.

Yes, kind of. Normally i'd agree with you, but..gigabyte utility on gigabyte mobo shows the freq the ram is supposed to be at...

Motherboard manufacturer software tools generally suck. Plus speccy results agree with CPU-Z. I guarantee that if you try additional monitoring tools (hwinfo is my favorite), they'll say the same thing.

So according to your BIOS, your RAM is current running at 1333 MHz CL8. Same as Speccy/CPU-Z says.

I'm not sure. My best guess is that just shows what the memory is set to run at, while that other shows what it's actually running at. So maybe it tries and fails to run at 1866 MHz as per the setting, then defaults down to 1333 MHz.

Good news though..i managed to get all three of them to 1600mhz..so thats great until i get a new 8 gig chip and try with that.
